I’ve encountered another scam, and this one doesn’t seem to show up in any searches, so I just thought I’d get the information out there. Let me know in the comments if some of the details are changing; we saw that happen over time with the Veehaus scam from a few years ago.
Initial email (sent through a contact form on the site):
Hi, this is Amos, i would like to know if you can handle website development for a clothing store?
Get back to me so i can send you the details.
Thanks!
After I responded, here was the followup:
Thanks for getting in touch. I am currently traveling out of town on a business trip and my time over the phone is limited, but i do have some details i’d like to share with you. I would like you to review the details and get back to me with any question you may have.
Well, i have a small unisex clothing business i run in Texas. Now, i am trying to go digital and i want you to build an informative website for advertisement, drive traffic to my physical location, and to increase my sales rate..
so i need you to check out this site, but i need something more excellent than this if it’s possible https:/
/ . The site would only be purely informative, so i need you to give me an estimate. The estimate should include hosting, and i want the site to have not more than 5 pages. I have a private project consultant who has the text content, images and the logos for the website.www. paolita. co. uk/ Note:
1. I want only English
2. I don’t have a domain yet but i want the domain name as Luxury-apparel.
us 3. You will be updating the site for me.
4. I will be providing the images, logos and content for the site.
5. I want the site up and running before the end of October.
6. My budget is $2000 to $4000
Thanks,
Amos
Inevitably, this will turn into an overpayment scam, I’m sure, where the “consultant” needs to be paid by me, which means that the scammer will actually send a bunch of money and ask me to send some of it along to the consultant. Whether I take the money out of my account or not, at some point the bank will discover that the incoming money was fraudulent and will recoup it from my account, meaning that I’ll be out all the money that was sent, including the money that I sent on to the consultant.
Anyway, let me know in the comments.
UPDATE: here’s the phone number he gave.
